How to Hem Lightweight Fabrics like Chiffon, Tulle, and Lace

For reference, and because this changes my original instructions a bit, I’m using the Scarlett skirt pattern, size 9/10. Plain overskirt is 14″ before hemming. I cut mine 16″ long.

I made a hem-guide 2 1/4 inches wide, took it to my ironing board, and with iron set to “3” and NO steam, used the guide to press the fabric up.

Sew along the folded edge (about 1/8 inch seam allowance).

Trim off excess material.

Go back to your iron, and using a 1/2″ hem guide (pattern instructions say to fold up 1/4″, press, then fold up another 1/2″ and press – I originally said 1/4″ for the second fold, but since I’m using this pattern, that changed), press up again (on the wrong side of the fabric). (I just drew a line on my original hem guide that was 1/2″ wide.)

Sew hem.

Done!
